The human steers the gripper arm, while the AI controls the camera arm to maintain the best viewpoint. Views from the camera are interpreted by the AI, and used to help guide the gripper arm by conveying haptic cues to the human (e.g. steering the human towards a good grasping point).

A state-of-the-art exoskeleton hand (far top left) has now been added – the human can feel the forces when the fingers of the slave robot grasp an object.

The theme of environmental stewardship is a great way to get young people interested in engineering and robotics – we get high participation from female students in our robotics classes when they are based on these motivating themes. Inspiring the next generation of roboticists is also an important activity of the RoMaNS project.
